General Safety Information Smoke Detectors Smoke Detectors Install Detectors Check Detectors Check the Batteries Fire Extinguisher Safety and Use Keep your back to an exit and, depending on the size of your extinguisher, begin by standing 6 to 8 feet (180-240 centimeters) away from the fire. Follow the four-step PASS procedure. If the fire does not begin to go out immediately, leave the area at once. Pass Procedure - Step 1: Pull the pin. Pass Procedure - Step 2: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Pass Procedure - Step 3: Squeeze the trigger. Pass Procedure - Step 4: Sweep the nozzle across the base of the fire.
